Description
MOTS-c
Metabolism / Longevity

MECHANISM OF ACTION

A 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within 12S ribosomal RNA. It is translocated to the nucleus in response to metabolic stress, activating AMPK and folate cycle enzymes. It enhances GLUT4 expression and glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. It responds to exercise: its serum levels increase significantly with physical activity.

KEY BENEFITS

  • AMPK-mediated metabolic improvements, including glucose and fat utilization.
  • Mimetic properties of exercise.
  • Anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects.
  • Supports bone metabolism through osteoblastic activity.
  • Protection against age-related physical decline.
  • Potential for research on T2DM and obesity management.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SAFETY

No adverse events have been reported in the available research. Timing the exercise and injection together may maximize the benefit.

RESEARCH AND CLINICAL NOTES

Kim et al. (2018, Cell Metabolism): Injection of MOTS-c significantly improved insulin resistance in mice fed a high-fat diet. It responds to exercise: MOTS-c levels in plasma increase fivefold with acute exercise in human studies.

TARGET PROFILE:

Metabolic optimization, longevity medicine, exercise-based wellness programs, and management of type 2 diabetes.
